After a six-week hiatus, Max and Anne are back. We’ve been working in that time to start a new coworking space in Lancaster, Pa. The Candy Factory is a coworking space providing a professional yet relaxed work environment for people looking for a creative, affordable way to work in Lancaster, PA. Not Bad Design, Creatively Wired and a whole slew of great folks are now calling The Candy Factory their new business home.
The Challenge: Create awareness for a local non-profit
Lancaster PA has a thriving farm market culture and the phrase “buy fresh, buy local” has become almost ubiquitous in the County. Still the local chapter of Buy Fresh Buy Local struggled with an identity crisis, often hearing from the public “who are you?” or “what is it you do?” NBD helped BFBL reach a wider audience and tell the story that answers both of those questions.

We began our work with the Lancaster Chapter of Buy Fresh Buy Local back in 2008. While we brainstormed many concepts, when we hit on the idea of telling their story with video we knew we were on to something. We teamed up with local video studio Otaku Motion (now Postage VFX) and created a 30 minute documentary from the perspective of the farmer, the restaurateur and a local family. The film was released in 2008 and was premiered as part of Buy Fresh Buy Local week at Lancaster’s historic Eastern Market. The film won a Communicator Award in 2009, is used by BFBL as an educational and marketing tool at screenings around the county and is available for sale on their Web site.
We have continued to work with BFBL on various projects including their “21 Day Challenge” social media campaign, and “Guide to Local Foods” guides for 2009 and 2010.
Update:
The trailer for “Buy Fresh, Buy Local, By Lancaster” has been submitted to Current.tv. Go there now and give it the thumbs up!
Anne says she hasn’t had it in the can and doesn’t think she’d like it. Max had it in the can and hated it. What are we talking about? The new Bud Light Lime, of course (get your mind out of the gutter) and their latest internet ad asking: “Have you had it in the can?” We also take a look at Quattro for Woman Bikini’s TV spot that suggests women should “trim your bush.” So, what to you think? Are these ads effective or just appealing to our juvenile side?
This episode we talk to Michael Ervin, market master at Lancaster’s Central Market, and Joel Walker, of AMQ Software. Market has its first Web site thanks to the generous donation from AMQ. It’s a great site and a great resource for Market and the stand holders. Check out the goods at www.CentralMarketLancaster.com, be sure to follow Market on Twitter at LancCentMarket and become a fan of Market on Facebook.
Once again we have to apologize for the audio quaility. As we mentioned in the last cast we are trying out some new equipment and we’re still at the begining of the learning curve.
This week Leslie Fordham, the new Public Art Manager for Lancaster city, sits down with us to discuss her background, public art and the city’s vision. Leslie has done some great things as the public art manager in Vail, Colo. for the past 9 years and we’re really excited to see what she can bring to Lancaster.

This week we were scheduled to record a joint podcast with David Moulton and Neil Hershey from local Lancaster podcast Beards Over Babies but they had to cancel at the last minute. I guess Anne and I are are just too intimidating for them to handle! Maybe we can still get them on in a future episode.
Anne and Max get fresh with Linda Aleci, steering committee chair of Lancaster’s Buy Fresh Buy Local chapter. BFBL is a national, grassroots organization that encourages people to buy and consume food that is grown and produced locally. A self-proclaimed foody, Linda talks with us about some of the exciting happenings at BFBL including the upcoming release of their new Food Guide and next month’s launch event at Central Market. She even challenges Max to get fresh and local!

Creatively Wired, meet The Creative Works of Lancaster. This week Anne and Max host the board of CWL, a non-profit looking to start a new community venue in Lancaster. The new space would become an incubator for music, art, theater film and more and include a coffee shop and space for co-working. A big thanks to Daniel Klotz, Douglas Campbell, Lydia Brubaker, Ken Mueller and Jennifer McMorris for crowding ’round our studio and talking with us this week. Get more info at The Creative Works of Lancaster Facebook fan page. And don’t forget to take the online survey and help shape the future of the CWL.

And congratulation to Damian Eby for winning last week’s challenge. He was the first to come and sit on our couch and won a $20 gift certificate for Carmen & David’s Creamery. Be sure to check out Damian’s podcast Stick it in Your Earhole.
That’s right, Not Bad Design and Creatively Wired have a new downtown home! We started moving into our new office/studio at 214 West Grant Street this week. It’s still a little rough around the edges, but stop in and see us any time! We’re planning a grand opening on June First Friday, watch for details. And, who will be the first to ‘get their picture took’ on our NBD Orange Couch?
