Sponsored in part by The Creative House of Lancaster, the evening’s events will feature some light refreshments for everyone in attendance, a DJ providing music and tours of the newly opened gallery. The First Friday exhibition will highlight artists from The Creative House of Lancaster as well as other studios within 323 North Queen Street.

The Challenge: Create a brand identity from the ground up

While most people in Lancaster, PA had never heard of coworking it’s something the folks at NBD have been eying for years. Since we would be bringing a new business and a new concept in the way people work to the area we decided to create strong visuals that would come to represent both.

The Candy Factory is a coworking space providing a professional yet relaxed work environment for people looking for a creative, affordable way to work in Lancaster, PA.
It is a community of small business owners, freelancers, students and other professional who are looking for a cool downtown location on the 300 block of Queen Street. The brainchild of NBD Creative Partners, Anne Kirby and Max Phillips, The Candy Factory is also home to Not Bad Design, providing our agency the flexibility to remain small and nimble while drawing on the strengths and collaboration of our coworkers.

As we dove into the process of building Lancaster’s first coworking facility we realized that this would be an opportunity to create a new brand that had absolutely no history in the area. After many hours of brainstorming (and some real “groaners” in the name department) we came up with The Candy Factory. The building we occupy, 323 North Queen, in fact used to be a candy factory, and it appealed to us to pay homage to the building’s heritage. But more importantly we wanted a name that spoke to the environment we’d hope to create among the members: fun yet relaxed. “Candy” brings out the kid in all of us (the fun) while “factory” reminds us that this is indeed a place to work. And trust us, it is a pretty sweet place to work.

The Challenge: Create a colorful brand and spread the word for Lancaster’s Pride Festival

After years of hard work by many individuals, Lancaster had its first Pride Festival in June of 2008 — and it was a huge success. As part of NBD’s pro-bono work we offered our design and marketing skills to help Lancaster PA Pride make 2009 and 2010’s events even more successful.

Beginning in 2009 NBD started working with Lancaster PA Pride to brand their annual Festival. This year we updated the festival logo and created a colorful brand that would represent all the “colors” of Lancaster’s LGBT community. We also worked with Tony Gibble Photography — who did all the fabulous photography — to create the “Celebrate” campaign and spread the word about the annual festival to the community at large. More that two dozen Lancasterians appeared in 16 photos that were featured on an electronic billboard along Manheim Pike. The images were also featured on the group’s Web site along with stories from the individuals featured in the campaign.

“BACKGROUND: Josh has been writing songs since his teens, but it was during Josh and Trista’s recent 7-month internship in Alexandria, Egypt, that his lyrics began to mature. Being so far from friends and family back home, entering a foreign culture, and witnessing the injustices of war and prejudice led to a lot of healthy introspection. As a parting gift, Josh and Trista had one of their songs, “The Rug, The Shovel, and The Gun” translated into Arabic and sang it to their Egyptian neighbors as they shared one last cup of tea. “The North Queen Street building that formerly housed Empire TV partially collapsed this morning and struck a Red Rose Transit Authority bus, police said.

Lancaster Buy Fresh Buy Local

The Challenge: Create awareness for a local non-profit

Lancaster PA has a thriving farm market culture and the phrase “buy fresh, buy local” has become almost ubiquitous in the County. Still the local chapter of Buy Fresh Buy Local struggled with an identity crisis, often hearing from the public “who are you?” or “what is it you do?” NBD helped BFBL reach a wider audience and tell the story that answers both of those questions.

We began our work with the Lancaster Chapter of Buy Fresh Buy Local back in 2008. While we brainstormed many concepts, when we hit on the idea of telling their story with video we knew we were on to something. We teamed up with local video studio Otaku Motion (now Postage VFX) and created a 30 minute documentary from the perspective of the farmer, the restaurateur and a local family. The film was released in 2008 and was premiered as part of Buy Fresh Buy Local week at Lancaster’s historic Eastern Market. The film won a Communicator Award in 2009, is used by BFBL as an educational and marketing tool at screenings around the county and is available for sale on their Web site.

We have continued to work with BFBL on various projects including their “21 Day Challenge” social media campaign, and “Guide to Local Foods” guides for 2009 and 2010.

Where’s Anne? Where’s Max?

Like that elusive Waldo, Max & Anne have made a game of today’s podcast. Anne’s not here (boo) so Max has to go it alone. Max decided to broadcast from the wrong station so none of the live audience could find the video cast today. Major fail. But we did rebroadcast on the proper channel and, of course, you can always watch the archived video or listen to the audio version on iTunes.

This past weekend was Easter, how was yours? Max celebrated with a bike ride.

A beautiful spring day, perfect for a ride. But Max needs to get a "big boy bike."

WHAT IS DYNGUS DAY?

Historically a Polish-American tradition, Dyngus Day celebrates the end of the often restrictive observance of lent and the joy of Easter. Over the decades, Dyngus Day has become a wonderful holiday to celebrate Polish-American culture, heritage and traditions.

This is a yearly debate among Dyngus Day revelers. The tradition holds true that on Easter Monday boys would sprinkle the girls with water and tap them with pussywillows. On Easter Tuesday, the women would return the favorite. At modern Dyngus Day parties it is common practice that both men and women trade water and pussywillow equally.

WHY PUSSY WILLOWS?

Pussy willows playa (sic) big part in Buffalo’s Dyngus Day celebrations as men and women flirt with playful “taps.” Branches of the plant are used as the pussy willow is one of the first “budding” plants of spring. But how did the pussy willow get its name? According to Polish legend, many springs ago, baby kittens fell into a raging river while chasing butterflies. The mother car (sic) sadly wept at the river’s edge, pleading for help for her drowning kittens. The willows heard her mournful cries and swept their long graceful branches into the water. The kittens grabbed the branches, held on tightly and were safely brought to shore. Every spring, from that day on, the willows sprouted fur-like buds where the tiny kittens once clung.

The Eris is pretty slick

Anne finally got a new phone. No, not the iPhone. But she did get a pretty sweet Eris by HTC. So far it looks like a great phone and a good solution for those Verizon folks reluctant to make the switch to AT&T. The gauntlet’s been thrown by Anne so watch for a head-to-head, battle of the phones between the two of them in the near future. Can’t figure out how to do screen captures on the Eris yet so you’ll just have to wait until Anne figures that out.

Forum on PA House Bill 300

Max will be attending the Forum on HB 300 tonight at the City Council Chambers, Southern Market Center tonight from 7pm-9pm. Join him if you can and show your support for the GLBT community. Look for video from tonight’s event coming this week.

On Monday, March 8, 2010 The Lancaster City Human Relations Commission is sponsoring a community discussion about Pennsylvania HB300, which is proposed legislation to amend the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act to extend protections to residents who are discriminated against on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. This forum will take place from 7:00-9:00 PM at the Southern Market Center, City Council Chambers, 100 South Queen St., Lancaster, PA. The public is invited to attend. First Friday at The Infantree

Max stopped by the Infantree Friday night for the Help Haiti Heal: Poster Show and caught a little video. The guys over there always put together great shows and this was no exception. And it was for a good cause, the Haiti relief effort. Max couldn’t get the video cut together for today’s video cast (#MaxFail) but will post is as soon as it’s ready.

We have asked designers and print makers to create limited edition posters. They will be sold for $25 each at the gallery and online. The show will benefit Build-A-Bridge, a Philadelphia-based non-profit arts organization that uses the power of the arts to bring hope and healing. Its Haiti response includes art therapy to help children who may not have the emotional outlets or tools to cope with the tragedy.

The show will also feature 20×30-inch, large-format black and white portraits taken by Lancaster photographer Matthew Lester on trips to rural Haiti. Lester has made six trips to Haiti over the last 10 years. For Lester, the portraits are an opportunity to show a perspective he is not seeing in mainstream media coverage of the earthquake’s aftermath.

The Creative House of Lancaster presents Lancaster for Haiti – an evening of live music and interactive entertainment on April 2

Lancaster, Pa. – The Creative House of Lancaster is pleased to announce Lancaster for Haiti – Hearts in Harmony, an innovative musical and interactive event April 2 at 7 p.m. in Freedom Hall at the Lancaster County Convention Center and Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square.

All proceeds will go to the Mennonite Central Committee of Lancaster’s Haiti earthquake relief efforts. Prior to the earthquake, MCC had been working in Haiti since 1958 in reforestation and environmental education, human rights, and advocacy for food security.

“We’re working together to harness CHL’s mission and spirit of creativity, collaboration, and mutual support,” said CHL executive director Anne Kirby, “to hold a truly exciting event. We want to let Haiti know that Lancaster, and hopefully all of America, has not forgotten their ongoing and extreme circumstances.

“It’s such an honor to partner with MCC and support their crucial work in Haiti, of which Lancaster is so very proud,” said Kirby. “And the support from all of our local partners has been generous beyond anything we ever imagined. We strongly encourage residents of Lancaster and throughout the Central Pennsylvania region to attend and support this unique event in Lancaster’s spacious new convention center hotel facility – it’s such an important cause and will be such a unique musical and interactive experience.”

Event content and schedule

Lancaster for Haiti will begin at 7 p.m. with live performance by Heads Up, a Lancaster-based urban arts organization that uses artist mentors to release vision in the lives of youth through urban arts programs.

A concert featuring an exciting line-up of bands arranged in partnership with WXPN will begin at 7:45 p.m. (see below for lineup).

This progressive event will also offer creative and new-media elements including live painting, live Twitter stream projection using the hashtag #L4Haiti, and live audiovisual streaming of the event by Creatively Wired. Streaming coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. will consist of interviews with the bands and live coverage of the performances.

Ticket sales

Tickets go on sale next week at various locations around Lancaster and will be available at the door, with a base price of $10 and suggested donation of $20. Attendees must be 18 years of age or older (and at least 21 to obtain alcoholic beverages).

Avatars with the Hearts in Harmony logo are popping up all over the internet. You too can easily make your own.

Ever since The CHL announced next month’s benefit concert, “Lancaster for Haiti – Hearts in Harmony,” people on Twitter and Facebook have been changing their avatars to include the Hearts in Harmony logo. If you want to show your support too, I’ve created a Photoshop template to make it easy for you. Just download the PSD file below, follow the included instructions and upload it to all you social networks. And be sure to join us on April 2nd for the benefit concert!

Max and Anne aren’t really hockey fans, but who could help being swept up in the Canada-US rivalry that proved to be one of the most exciting sporting events of the Winter Olympics? And, wow, what an ending the closing ceremonies proved to be. The last 10 minutes was an explosion of every Canadian cliché wrapped in a Busby Berkeley-meets-Macy’s-Thanksgiving-parade production that was so over the top and campy that Max nearly peed himself with laughter. If you missed it all we can say is “bring on the giant beavers.” We wish we could find a video of the closing ceremonies out there on the interwebs, but we’ve had no luck so far. If you find one, please let us know. We’d love to share the Canadian love!

A new Web site has popped up called PleaseRobMe .com that claims to be “Listing all those empty homes out there” and apparently it’s causing quite a stir. As one of the creates of the site, Boy van Amstel of the Netherlands, told Amber MacArthur, and Leo Laporte in a Net @ Night interview, the site’s purpose is to highlight the dangers of listing your home address with sites like Foursquare and then checking in and out from that location. Basically the site is nothing more than a Twitter search the compiles tweets like “@TwitterUser left home and checked in 6 minutes ago: Tira-I-misu (@ Bubble Factory) http://4sq.com/xxxx” (we’ve removed the names and links for privacy, but you can find a lot more at pleaserobme .com).

Ok, so I’m listening to Mac Break Weekly and it turns out that one of the cool new iPhone accessories merges the old-school and new-school – a paper iPhone case that you can draw on. There’s something so yummy about wrapping your high tech device in a brown paper cover. Sort of takes me back to the days of creating covers for my text books out of old paper shopping bags. Max <3 iPhone innovation.

We worked with them to find a happy medium that honors its past while looking to the company’s future.

Launch Music Conference … We're on board

Launch Music Conference was in the house last night. This week we had the pleasure of interviewing Jeremy Weiss owner of CI Records and one of the founders of Launch Music Conference. Also sitting in on the interview was the wonderful Ken Mueller of Inkling Media who is helping Launch with their social media promotions and will also be part of the conference as a panelist.

We had a great time with these guys, had a little wine and learned a lot about Launch.

Lancaster Online app for iPhone and Android phones

I usually cringe whenever I have to visit the Lancaster Newspaper’s Web site, LancasterOnline.com. Visually it’s a mess and frankly I can never find what I’m looking for via the site’s built in search (I usually end up using Google to search their site). And I think it’s hysterical that the site’s favicon is “LOL” — because, let’s face it, the site is a joke.

That said you can imagine it was with some reservation that I downloaded the new Lancaster Online iPhone App. (Available on iTunes, search term “Lancaster Online”. Honestly I would share the link but I can’t find it on their site!) Watching the progress bar as the app found its way to my iPhone I thought, “I’ll be deleting this app soon, what a waste of time.” But once I opened it and started using it I was pleasantly surprised. The interface is clean and easy to use. Stories are accessed with stacked, horizontal scroll wheels, and a simple yet intuitive interface. The app gives you access to the most current stories, video, pictures and weather (including radar and video). Stories are formatted in print that’s easy to read on a mobile device, and has an option to share via email, text, Twitter or Facebook. You can even upload photos directly to Lancaster Online from the app. (I’m not sure what happens to them once uploaded as I haven’t tried this feature yet.)

On the down side, I couldn’t help notice the app’s lack of a search function — an option I assumed would be included. I guess LOL doesn’t want you to find older stories on their site or on their mobile apps. And it is ad-supported, which isn’t too intrusive until you’re trying to watch a video. But at least it’s free.

Overall, not a bad effort on their part. I may be tempted to give up my morning paper and go completely digital (yes, I still enjoy reading the actual paper). There is a version available for Android phones as well. We’ll look into that as soon as Anne gets her new Droid, Nexus One Phone or whatever cool new offering Verizon has when she finally gets around to making a decision.

Anne says she hasn’t had it in the can and doesn’t think she’d like it. Max had it in the can and hated it. What are we talking about? The new Bud Light Lime, of course (get your mind out of the gutter) and their latest internet ad asking: “Have you had it in the can?” We also take a look at Quattro for Woman Bikini’s TV spot that suggests women should “trim your bush.” So, what to you think? Are these ads effective or just appealing to our juvenile side?

Monsters of (Lancaster) Podcasting

This week Creatively Wired played host to some of the local podcasters here in the Lancaster area. Joining us was Damian Eby and Parker Lindstrom from Stick It In Your Earhole, Kelly Watson from One Woman Marketing, and David Moulton and Daniel Klotz from Beards Over Babies. We had a great time finding out the hows and whys our fellow ‘casters’ do their thing.

On a side note, we once again had issues with the audio and had to do alot of work in post to improve the quaility. If you remember the last time we had Stick It In Your Earhole on the show the audio was a disaster. I’m sensing a trend here.

This is the email sent to the media in response to the city’s “Guerilla Art.” What do you think? Chime in with your comments and we’ll talk about it in a future episode.

Dear Media Personnel,

You were sent this e-mail because you have a voice that can be cast upon many ears. This is a message about a need to change our local politics and art scene, due to the actions and reasons listed below.

It has come to our attention that Mayor J. Richard Gray of Lancaster has held private meetings with local art galleries, artists, and entrepreneurs. During these meetings the Mayor attempted to persuade the locals into a tactic he calls “Guerilla Art Marketing”. Many ideas were thrown out as to what could be done for “Guerilla Art Acts” such as, painting the streets, hanging giant spiders over the city, and even covering a statue in tin-foil. Sure enough on May 2, 2009 an article published in the Intelligencer Journal titled “Tin-foil Treasures on Gallery Row”, showed the Mayor himself claiming he was targeted by “Guerilla Artists”. The reason for all this guerilla non-sense is to create hype and draw people into Lancaster (or as the mayor refers to it “The edge of the east”). He believes this will gain the city a positive reputation in time for his re-election and, to impress 600 mayors and 6 state officials who are showing up at the convention center on July 27th.

What this says about our local galleries and artists is that they are easily bought by the persuasion of false ideals, lack of understanding of what art truly is, and short sightedness. Any gallery or artist that participates in these acts of “Guerilla Art” is sacrificing his credibility for an illusory short-term gain. These acts of vandalism will ultimately damage the Lancaster art scene.
What this says about the Mayor is that he is a liar and a manipulator. He doesn’t understand proper marketing, or logical campaign tactics. As well as a complete lack of understanding of what art is.

As for the Mayor, he certainly does not have our vote.

As for you, you have a mind and a voice. Use it, many ears are waiting.

Last week we had the pleasure of recording a joint podcast with Damian and Parker from the funniest podcast on the ‘net, Stick it in Your Ear Hole. Unfortunately we had some technical difficulties (ok, I forgot to make sure the mikes were actually live) and the audio is rather poor and hard to hear in some spots, but over all it was a great interview and those guys are so funny! And as our motto goes, “there is no pretending in podcasting” so we just had to post it.

We did one big recording session that night so be sure to listen to the second half when Anne and I appear as guests on Stick it in Your Ear Hole. Oh, and don’t worry about their audio, the episode turned out great. You’d think they were professionals or something.

As a follow up to our interview with Ryan Mast of Unitheo, we wanted to let you know his music video for Hiram Ring’s “One Girl for Me” got some love at the opening night of the Rumschpringe Film Festival. According to Unitheo’s Facebook page the short film won Best in Music Video category and best student film. The festival, Ryan and Hiram were all mentioned in an Entertainment Lancaster article (aslo published online at LancasterOnline.com).

Sandy gives her notice, Pownce gets pounced

It’s hard to find good help these days and when you do it’s even more painful to loose that help. Last week Values of n [valuesofn.com] announced that it’s taking their online services I Want Sandy [iwantsandy.com] and Stikkit [stikkit.com] offline for good. Sandy was like your insanely anal-in-a-good-way, super-oraganized personal assistant, while Stikkit was akin to a band of intelligent robotic sticky notes. But as of December 19, 2008 users will find themselves deep in the chaotic mess of everyday life wondering where their favorite assistants went.

“Why?” you ask. It seems the brainchild behind the services and CEO of Values of n, Rael Dornfest, is taking a job at Twitter.com and bringing Sandy and Stikkit with him. But don’t celebrate yet, according to a blog post by Dornfest, “Twitter has no immediate plans to incorporate Sandy or Stikkit’s feature sets into its core product.”

In a similar story last week Pownce [pownce.com] also announced the December 15th shut down of its social networking site for rather similar reasons. The creators of Pownce have taken positions at Six Apart [sixapart.com], makers of blogging software Movable Type and Vox, and they’re taking their toys with them. Again it seems there are no plans to port the Pownce service to Six Apart, but users are encouraged to export the contents of their accounts so they can “continue the spirit of Pownce on Vox or TypePad,” according to a post on the Six Apart blog.

“What does it all mean?” Well let me tell you; I have no clue. But I have wondered how long sites like this would be able to survive with no (or weak) revenue models, and heavy competition for users’ affection from similar services on the Web. My prediction is that this is a trend we will continue to witness in the future.

Now if I could only build that time machine I’ve been meaning to get around to. I’d place a few wagers on which Web 2.0 giants will be standing and who gets gobbled up by this time next year.

Bummed out about blogging? Don’t have time to Twitter? Okay, no says you have to. But you should be paying attention to what others might be saying about your business or organization in a Web 2.0 world. In his blog, Socially Creative, Kyle Lacy talks about his customer service experience — not a good one — with a local bank. He claims that two blog posts about poor customer service found their way to the top of a Google search in only two days. Google searches aside the point is that people are having online conversations and they could be talking about you. Lacy makes this compelling point:

I don’t care if you don’t agree or believe in Social Media as a promotion tool. You should be paying attention to the conversations being developed and whether or not you are part of that conversation. You cannot afford to ignore the Web 2.0 world anymore.

In an earlier post I cited a magazine article that talks about the many-to-many conversation happening on the web. Lacy’s experience perfectly illustrates this point and is something every business — large and small — should be aware of.

But there’s too much information to wade through, what can I do?

One of the tools we use is the free service Google Alerts. You simply enter the word or phrase you want to track on the ‘net and you’re alerted any time it’s mentioned. If you’re a Twitter user another great tool is TweetBeep. Like Google Alerts, any time a Twitter user mentions a word or phrase you’re tracking you’ll know about it. Services like these can help you monitor your business’s online reputation in a simple, painless way. And, hey, you might just find yourself joining the conversation too.

Even if you don’t join the conversation you’d be smart to listen to it. You may be surprised at what you hear.

NPR Morning Edition, October 17, 2008 · ”A recent survey found that one in five company managers checked out job applicants on Facebook or other social networking sites. And one-third of them found content that led them to reject a candidate.

The survey by CareerBuilder.com found that one turnoff for potential employers is pictures of the applicants drinking or using drugs. Managers also checked whether applicants bad-mouthed a former employer or co-worker.

The survey found that of employers who didn’t check applicants’ pages, nearly 10 percent said they’ll start.”

Not Bad Design helped launch another small business on the waves of the World Wide Web this week. Lori Baer, local freelance writer and editor, came to us earlier this year to help market her business on the Web and guide her in her endeavor to become the most popular blogger since Perez Hilton put fingertip to keyboard. (O.k. that may be a bit of an exaggeration. She really just wanted to share her personal love affair with “culinary celebrations that get us through our every day.”)

Our fist task was to build a site that reflects her personality as a professional and highlights her skill as a freelance writer. Today we are proud to announce that LBaer.com went live this week, thus accomplishing task number one. Lori is thrill with her new online presence and that just makes us a little darn proud of ourselves.

Task number two was to introduce her to the world of blogging. For some of us this doesn’t seem like a big deal. But for those who do not spend a good chunk of their day nose-to-the-internet a blog can seem like a daunting task. Luckily Lori took to the medium like a duck to water (it’s only writing after all, something she knows how to do) and is loving her new blog, Friday Night Pizza. Her passion for food and cooking and her conversational blogging style come together to create a fun, informative read.

So while you’re out there surfing around be sure to stop by her new site and blog. And who knows? You may even learn a thing or two.

This project has been incredibly rewarding, enriching our sense of community and pride in Lancaster’s agricultural heritage and future.

We interviewed farmers, BFBL committee members, restaurateurs, and patrons of our local foods to understand how a stronger local food system benefits our county and beyond. Small changes make big differences in our economy, our community, and your health.

The Stevens & Smith Historic Site

The Challenge: Generate new buzz around old buildings about to undergo restorations to turn the clock back more that 100 years

The Stevens & Smith Historic Site project already had a brand in place when NBD met them in 2008. The problem was very few people knew that five buildings surrounding the new Convention Center, along Queen and Vine Streets, were actually part of an historic preservation project to restore the façades to their appearances when they were owned by Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith.

Part of the challenge for The Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County was that they needed to let the public know what was going on at the historic site, but they also needed to convey that the buildings were available for commercial lease. Working with the existing branding, NBD created 17 large outdoor banners — some as tall as 20 feet — that would adorn the five historic buildings. The larger-than-life images of Stevens and Smith, along with the slogan “discover the past, engage the future” helped to draw media attention, pique the community’s curiosity and broadcast the commercial viability of the site.

Seed of a Nation

The Challenge: Brand and market the premiere of an original, historic stage production

Seed of a Nation, presented by Theater of the Seventh Sister, follows William Penn’s “Holy Experiment” and five families through several generations. The problem was that, since this was a brand new production written by one of the theater’s founding members, no one had ever heard of it. NBD helped finalize the show’s branding and created a marketing campaign designed to tell the characters’ individual stories.

Think social media marketing is just a passing fad? Think again

Consumers are talking — online. What are they saying about your company?

I love to find little gems. Design gems. Wisdom gems. Fashion gems. I recently stumbled upon a marketing gem, and it couldn’t be more poignant or timely. Joseph Jaffe, in a recent article in “Deliver” magazine, argues that starting a conversation with your target audience is what business should be thinking about now. Where is a large portion of this conversation already happening? You guessed it, on the big bad Web. Jaffe suggests that tools like blogs and social network sites like YouTube and MySpace have shifted marketing from a “one-to-many” conversation — business to the masses — to a “many-to-many” conversation — consumer to consumer with business joining in.

Here’s an example Jaffe gives: consumer is mad at his ISP and records his phone conversation with customer service, posts the audio to his blog, blog gets noticed by a newscast and consumer gets interviewed, someone uploads the interview to YouTube — now it’s gone viral. Okay, this isn’t going to happen in all cases, but new media has empowered consumers to share his or her experiences with their peers, who in turn share with their peers — instant online conversation. Smart businesses will learn to join that conversation in meaningful, honest ways.

Think you don’t need to be online? Think MySpace is just for kids and blogs are just for internet geeks with too much time on their hands? Think again. Your customers are online and they’re already part of the conversation. What will you do to join it?

NBD helps create a home for pets downtown

There’s some exciting news in the 300 block of Queen Street, downtown Lancaster this week, and NBD is proud to be part of it. A new pet shop, Rainbow PET Creations, has opened its doors and is settling into its new home at 305 North Queen street. NBD has been working with RPC over the past few months on a new identity campaign, and this week we rolled out phase one of their signage project.

RPC started out as Rainbow Net Creations, located in Central Market Mall, a gift shop that also carried a few pet items. RPC saw the demand for pet products grow, so at the beginning of this year they moved to a new shop on North Queen and decided to retool their business as a pet boutique and grooming salon. One of the challenges for NBD was to help this small, neighborhood business re-brand and market itself with its new business goals in mind.

The first decision was what to call the new shop. People were already familiar with the Rainbow Net Creations brand, but the name didn’t address the vision of the new business. In working with the shop’s proprietor, Barry Russell, the decision was made to rename the business Rainbow PET Creations, with an emphasis on pets. Keeping the name similar will help retain the established client base, and help those clients to understand the shop’s new focus.

The next task was to come up with a new image that better suited the new business, and help the shop to coexist with its new neighbors. We came up with a logo that was fun and inviting, qualities of both RPC and the North Queen shopping experience.

Once a new identity had been chosen, the next goal was to get new signage in place. Phase one of the project included window graphics with the new name and logo. The printing and installation was done by Sign-A-Rama, on Columbia Avenue, and I have to send a big “thanks” to Sean and Jason for doing a fantastic job. The goal of this phase was to get the name visible and identify the shop. Future phases will include additional widow graphics that pull elements from the logo as “brand characters” and to add architectural elements that tie into surrounding shops. Also on the drawing board is a hanging, wooden sign, based on the RPC logo. The finished product will draw attention to the shop, yet live in concert with the image and style of the neighborhood.

So stop down on North Queen to visit Barry at Rainbow PET Creations and take a peek at our latest project. But be sure to come back for First Friday in April, when phase two of the window graphics are in place. You’re sure to love this new home for you and your pets. And, hey, the design’s not bad either!

NBD helping small biz tackle Social Media Marketing

Last Tuesday, my Not Bad business partner Max and I had the pleasure of presenting a workshop on “Online Social Networking & Your Business” to local small business owners for the Lancaster Library Small Business Center. Here’s a little history and recap of what we discussed – Enjoy!

We here at Not Bad Design utilize both traditional and nontraditional forms of networking, and we’ve experienced firsthand how effective online networking can work for small businesses and organizations just as much as—if not more than—traditional face-to-face networking. Online social networking allows you to connect with a vast number of people almost instantly. This can be an overwhelming and daunting task to those who are new to this form of networking, but fear not NBD is here to help.

So when asked by the Small Business Center if I would present a workshop for local small businesses, I jumped at the chance. Not only do I love networking but I really enjoy sharing my knowledge of online networking to anyone who will listen. I also believe it’s imperative for all businesses to master these tools if they want to compete in today’s market.

Why network online, you ask? Well, we’ll be breaking that question down on the Not Bad Blog over the next few weeks, but for now consider the following:

More companies, especially in the marketing world, are making online social networking skills a requirement for new employees; also, the skills you attain while networking online are becoming so important for both businesses and jobseekers that Paul Forster of Indeed.com has said that,

“Having social networking skills is now like being able to use Microsoft Office.”

So where to start? Well, the big wigs of online networking—facebook.com, myspace.com and linkedin.com—are a good place to start and very user-friendly, but remember there are many more options out there. Do your research to figure out which site might work best for you and your business. If you’re not sure how to begin, come to one of our workshops or check back to the Not Bad Blog.

A caveat – be aware, smart and friendly while you take this step into uncharted territories and please, please, please stay away from bad design. It simply pains us here at NBD to see bad design. Though cliché, it’s true you have one chance to make a good impression, so don’t blow it with bad design.
