So we used to have a an OAT or Occupation Assessment Tax. This is what I found about the referendum that changed it to the general 1.10 tax.

Are we going back to OAT?

When I downloaded it from my phone I did a search for "Lancaster Online" and found it right away. I've gone back and searched on the mobile store, the iTunes store, the Apple site, the DoApps site and LancasterOnline.com. Nothing. Nada. Zip. I wonder if they pulled the app. I'll follow up on this and let you know if I find anything.

Great review Max. I have a love/hate relationship with LOL. Hovering your mouse over a category and than steadily moving along the line to the section I'm looking for... frustrating. Glad to hear the smart phone app is... better.

Agreed on the local comment. It kills me when I hear about local companies taking their business out of state. The Convention Center did the same thing with their website, going to California to get it done.

Good point, Ken. And they did outsource it. DoApp out of Minneapolis, MN. Too bad they couldn't have outsourced it to local talent.

Justin, I hadn't thought of that before. They probably make the site just confusing enough to scare off their hard core readers (ie: the 65+ crowd).

Glad to see LancasterOnline.com getting some honest words thrown at it. I've been getting the newspaper at home on a trial and I actually like reading it better than using their Web site. Sadly, this probably makes them happy while it should be deeply frightening them. Thanks for tipping me off about the app!

Now if they start losing subscribers because of it, it will probably disappear!

I think I'll be holding out for the Nexus One so we won't know how it works until the Spring (when Verizon finally gets a phone worth paying big bucks for!)

Maybe someone else can let us know how it works on Android?? Anyone?

Max, I have a hard time believing you would be fair - just saying :)

As for the droid I've been researching it more ( who knows it might be my only smart phone option for a while) and it can do some really cool things but no matter how well they photograph it they can't make it look sexy. I want sexy!

Holy crow those AOL (excuse me...Aol.) logos are horrid. They remind me of cheap sticker sets that belong to my 5-year old.

Here's the company behind it: Wolff Olins (<a href="http://www.wolffolins.com/" target=_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.wolffolins.com/</a>). I can't even imagine the price tag on that project.

I wholeheartedly agree about double entendre sexual innuendo used in advertising. When I see this I immediately think "lazy". The Bud brand is known for being piss-water or college beer. That said, is the lame technique appropriately being used here? And if so does it become brilliant? Maybe. But why with lime when every other brand with a lime flavor has approached it differently? Maybe Bud is changing it up by staying the same, sprinkling the junk their known for on a new feature.

But about the Burger King ads I have to disagree; I think they're awesome. I believe they can be attributed to the infamous Crispin Porter + Bogusky (I'm obviously a fan).

Good job on the podcast. It was a fun listen.

Uh, Yeah, I think the idea of posting people under the cameras and having them all break into dance at the same moment around the city is a fun idea too.

It's funny how: in neighborhoods that don't have them, the cameras are wanted, while those that do eye them with suspicion. Did you know that the police authorities cannot view the feed from those cameras without a court order - while investigating a crime and looking for evidence. Very specific about time of day and place.

Dan and Charlie you both make very good points.

I'm not against the cameras personally but I strongly believe in transparency and oversight.

I would love to see some city stats on this issue. Have they even been tracking crime since the cameras were installed? Also, now that more people are in the know about this issue maybe they should have another meeting? It would be interesting to see who would show up.

Anyone know how the protest went last weekend?

As for the "happening" I love the dance idea Dan. We could film them filming us and make a film out of it. :o)

Anyway, I was thinking that it would be a fun idea to set up a "happening" where we have a person at every camera around the city simultaneously to bust into a dance for 3-5 minutes. Or something of that nature. Maybe hold up some sort of sign facing the camera or wear Groucho glasses.

I give a damn. I live in the city. I've attended the meetings. I've spoken at the meetings. I've spoken at city council. I've spoken out publicly and online about it for years.

The opposition isn't about safety, nor are the cameras themselves. There's no accountability, oversight, or transparency. These cameras can and will be abused, and we have no idea whether they have been already but it's likely.

Also--I've been burglarized, and I don't want the cameras. Putting the general public under constant general surveillance is fundamentally undemocratic and presumes guilt. If I'm doing nothing wrong, why are you tracking me?

Nice guys. I am really irritated with the people against these cameras.

I went to a meeting about the new cameras last year with people that run the program and a couple of officers that discussed the issues. Maybe 12 people were there including the camera people. It was disgusting to see the lack of involvement. I live in a building that has a camera (one of the first installed years ago) and have had zero problems. Before the camera, the business under us was robbed multiple times. I walk all of the time day and night and feel relatively safe. Many of the people against the cameras do not even live in the city. So what do they know and who cares what there opinion is. I did not see them at the meetings asking questions or giving a shit then. Lets just say one of these people are mugged or whatever. Then they will want to know where the camera was to help them. The people running the cameras go through an intense background check and are trained in how to ethically operate these devices. It will push crime away from the cameras and that is a good thing. Thats the point—a deterrent. So, people need to get more involved and educate themselves on issues that they feel so strongly about. It is just like this current culture to jump all over an issue without really being any part of its initial planning. You see something on the internet and fly off the handle.

Dang, we're mentioned twice on the CW podcast. Feeling all warm inside.

Am I the first to say anything about the letter? Wow. The whole thing sounds very snooty and elitist. I didn't know about the newspaper article, but I did see the buggy shaped baked potato on Prince street. It made me chuckle, I made a joke about it, and I moved on. What a mean, sad person the author of this letter must be. :(

Way to stick up for design with your anti-pick of the week. It amazes me to see photographers balk at the "high" price of good design, and then get cranky about people not wanting to pay THEIR prices. You get what you pay for. Of course, I have also seen good designers walk a thin line with photo copyright too. It's a weird world we work in.

Dang, we’re mentioned twice on the CW podcast. Feeling all warm inside.

Am I the first to say anything about the letter? Wow. The whole thing sounds very snooty and elitist. I didn’t know about the newspaper article, but I did see the buggy shaped baked potato on Prince street. It made me chuckle, I made a joke about it, and I moved on. What a mean, sad person the author of this letter must be.

Thanks for the mention! =) Hudson and I are really excited about the project -- I'd love to get more feedback from people about it.

You're absolutely right about the value of finding a custom designer for developing a brand. I think the "wal-mart design" sites are attractive because the designs usually look good, but it's not unique, and a business won't value its brand as much.

I have a question about crediting content posted to FB and other online social networking “environments”. My current FB profile picture is a composite. I’m using an image I found online but I don’t know the name of the photographer. As a professional photographer I want to be sensitive to copyright issues. I’m guessing my use of this image violates copyright laws? Could you provide some broad guidelines.

...of course it would be helpful if I answer the WHOLE question! Because I haven't relied heavily on these services there was little or no transition. Pownce is offering an export tool — that has to this day not worked for me. I do use Jott, Twitter, Facebook and Blogger. I also could not live without Google docs and calendars. Now if those services were to go away that would be a little more traumatic. But because of their track record I *trust* they won't be going away soon.<br/><br/>Thanks for the input!

Actually I've been using Jott for a while and love it. I had a Sandy account but never switched over because I was happy with Jott. And the do have a revenue model. Back in August they came out of Beta and offered a free basic and premium pay account. It's covered in a <a HREF="http://jott.com/jotters/?s=beta&x=0&y=0" REL="nofollow" rel="nofollow">blog post on their site.</a><br/><br/>As for Pownce, I did have an account but didn't use it much. It seemed to have similar functionality to other sites I use heavily and I didn't have a lot of connections on the service. I think the lack of unique features is part of its demise.

Nice post. Seeing as that there are now so many social networks catering to such a wide range of niches, my biggest problem is finding ones relevant to me and related to my specific interests or product niches. Google seems to be inefficient and returns alot of irrelevant results. A cool resource that I use is this search engine designed specifically to find <a HREF="http://findasocialnetwork.com" REL="nofollow" rel="nofollow">social networking sites</a>.
