Agreed on the local comment. It kills me when I hear about local companies taking their business out of state. The Convention Center did the same thing with their website, going to California to get it done.

Justin, I hadn’t thought of that before. They probably make the site just confusing enough to scare off their hard core readers (ie: the 65+ crowd).

Not bad at all. It will definitely be my morning paper. Used to be their twitter stream but I couldn’t watch the videos.

As for the droid I’ve been researching it more ( who knows it might be my only smart phone option for a while) and it can do some really cool things but no matter how well they photograph it they can’t make it look sexy. I want sexy!

But about the Burger King ads I have to disagree; I think they’re awesome. I believe they can be attributed to the infamous Crispin Porter + Bogusky (I’m obviously a fan).

Good job on the podcast. It was a fun listen.

It’s funny how: in neighborhoods that don’t have them, the cameras are wanted, while those that do eye them with suspicion. Did you know that the police authorities cannot view the feed from those cameras without a court order – while investigating a crime and looking for evidence. Very specific about time of day and place.

I’m not against the cameras personally but I strongly believe in transparency and oversight.

I would love to see some city stats on this issue. Have they even been tracking crime since the cameras were installed? Also, now that more people are in the know about this issue maybe they should have another meeting? It would be interesting to see who would show up.

Anyone know how the protest went last weekend?

The opposition isn’t about safety, nor are the cameras themselves. There’s no accountability, oversight, or transparency. These cameras can and will be abused, and we have no idea whether they have been already but it’s likely.

Also–I’ve been burglarized, and I don’t want the cameras. Putting the general public under constant general surveillance is fundamentally undemocratic and presumes guilt. If I’m doing nothing wrong, why are you tracking me?

I went to a meeting about the new cameras last year with people that run the program and a couple of officers that discussed the issues. Maybe 12 people were there including the camera people. It was disgusting to see the lack of involvement. I live in a building that has a camera (one of the first installed years ago) and have had zero problems. Before the camera, the business under us was robbed multiple times. I walk all of the time day and night and feel relatively safe. Many of the people against the cameras do not even live in the city. So what do they know and who cares what there opinion is. I did not see them at the meetings asking questions or giving a shit then. Lets just say one of these people are mugged or whatever. Then they will want to know where the camera was to help them. The people running the cameras go through an intense background check and are trained in how to ethically operate these devices. It will push crime away from the cameras and that is a good thing. Thats the point—a deterrent. So, people need to get more involved and educate themselves on issues that they feel so strongly about. It is just like this current culture to jump all over an issue without really being any part of its initial planning. You see something on the internet and fly off the handle.

Am I the first to say anything about the letter? Wow. The whole thing sounds very snooty and elitist. I didn’t know about the newspaper article, but I did see the buggy shaped baked potato on Prince street. It made me chuckle, I made a joke about it, and I moved on. What a mean, sad person the author of this letter must be.

Way to stick up for design with your anti-pick of the week. It amazes me to see photographers balk at the “high” price of good design, and then get cranky about people not wanting to pay THEIR prices. You get what you pay for. Of course, I have also seen good designers walk a thin line with photo copyright too. It’s a weird world we work in.

You’re absolutely right about the value of finding a custom designer for developing a brand. I think the “wal-mart design” sites are attractive because the designs usually look good, but it’s not unique, and a business won’t value its brand as much.

As for Pownce, I did have an account but didn’t use it much. It seemed to have similar functionality to other sites I use heavily and I didn’t have a lot of connections on the service. I think the lack of unique features is part of its demise.

I’m interested to hear about how you transition away from these services–what alternates you choose, and how you decide whether you can “trust again”!

I look forward to reading more from you two!
